The Pink Lake and Alicante city
This Sunday 12th February, 2019, we will discover two fabulous destinations mixed with a lot of history, culture and incredible nature: Alicante city and Pink Lake of Torrevieja.
A day of history, culture, relaxation and beach with My Erasmus Valencia.
ALICANTE, the city was founded by the Greeks more than 2,500 years ago under the name Acre Leuca (‘Cerro Blanco’), then the Romans renamed it Lucentum (City of Light) and the Arabs named it Al Lukant.
The main attraction in Alicante, is the “Santa Barbara castle”. This castle is is located on cliff Benacantil at an altitude of 166m abovesea level, and has always been an important strategic point during the battles for the city. Today from the castle you can admire the breathtaking view of the city of Alicante, and the sea with its beaches and neighboring villages. Also there is now a museum of history in the castle.
The entrance ticket to the castle … is included in the price
One of the great attractions of the city is the Paseo Explanada. It is a universally known scenic spot to rest for visitors and locals. The floor of the street is designed as a magnificent mosaic, which is made up of 6 million stones. In the center of the old town is the magnificent building of the Basilica of Santa Maria which has been here since the sixteenthcentury and was originally a Muslim mosque.
In a few words, Alicante, you will be surprised by its beauty and charm;)
PINK LAKE, After Alicante we will go south, specifically, to the Natural Park of Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja. In it, we found a couple of salty lagoons, but each with a different color.
To the north, the lagoon of La Mata, which has a greenish appearance, nothing out of the ordinary. However, to the south we are quickly struck by the immense lagoon of Torrevieja, but above all, its pink color.
The result, as you can see, is spectacular and unique throughout Spain.
This pinkish color, which permeates the banks of this lagoon, is mainly due to bacteria (halobacteria) present in this extreme environment. To be more exact, it is due to proteins called bacteriorhodopsin that bind to the membranes of halobacteria.
Our recommendation is that you go with flip flops or whatever you want, but not barefoot, because the salt crystals that we step on are quite annoying. Yes, try to take a piece, and you will see that in nature, geometric shapes do exist. Depending on the weather and the solar position, the pink color of the lagoon can be very intense or very thin, so it can be visited at any time of the year.
We assure you that this is a destination that will leave you speechless and is a must before leaving Valencia!
Come to this incredible excursion and enjoy one of the best sunsets of the Iberian Peninsula.
Some images say more than a thousand words.
